In less than 24 hours your social media feeds will be bombarded with mushy gushy professions of love; full of red roses, pink hearts, and chocolate. (It has probably started already!) Depending how you feel about Valentine’s Day, these will make you nauseous or will give your heart all the feels.
I’m a — let people live — kind of person when it comes to holiday celebrations (I have similar opinions when it comes to Christmas too). I generally lean towards the side of ‘love it’ for Valentine’s Day. I mean who wouldn’t love the increased abundance of chocolate everywhere; and I love chick flicks year round so any excuse to watch more, i’ll take it. However, Jose and I don’t really celebrate to any huge extent, but, mainly because we are broke and lazy. Last year I bought him a pint of Ben&Jerry’s and put a bow on top, and he watched reality television with me; and it was perfect. I think in that sense Valentine’s Day is nice, a little extra reminder to show the people in your life that you love them.
I know a big argument against Valentine’s Day is that we shouldn’t have to be reminded to tell people we love them, and in a perfect world that is true. But, this isn’t a perfect world, and sometimes work, kids, school, and other responsibilities get in the way. So a little reminder is nice.
If you hate Valentine’s Day, that’s your prerogative. Trust me I can see your side. The pressure that society puts on the holiday is ridiculous. Making those without a significant other or a date, feel inferior. The holiday is supposed to be a celebration of love, whether that be love for your partner, love for your friends or family or even self-love.
But, with the way the world is right now, so seemingly full of hate and anger. It’s nice to remind the people in your life that you love and care for them. So, Happy Valentine’s Day my friends, may your day be filled with love!
