I’ve written quite a few personal posts lately, they seem to be pouring out of me apparently. One of the things I’ve been thinking a lot about lately is bad habits. I have quite a few of them, and its like going down a rabbit hole trying to figure out how and why they started.
However, they say the first step towards change is awareness, and I am quite aware. The next step however is to try and to do something about it. I know I have more than 4 bad habits but these are the ones I’m going to focus on first.
Poor sleeping habits.
I have always been a night owl. I get some of my best work done (whether that be school work, a blog post or deep cleaning the apartment) in the wee hours of the night. But, that isn’t always conducive to a schedule that has you waking up between 7 and 8 the next morning. I also struggle with health issues that already cause fatigue and exhaustion — so a proper amount of sleep is vital to maintaining my health. I have also found the days I get more sleep I am less stress and anxious. So all and all there are many clear benefits of me getting more and consistent sleep, now its only a matter putting it into action.
I quite often wait until the last minute to complete many of my tasks. To be honest I am writing this post at 10pm the night before I am going to post it. I always say that I work better under a deadline, which may be true, but it doesn’t mean it has to be the case. Instead of telling myself I have plenty of time to do things like watch TV or go out to drinks with my friends before my work needs to be done, I will work at telling myself that there will be plenty of time to do those things after I’ve finished.
Watching too much TV.
This one goes along with the previous, because this is usually the cause of my procrastination. I love TV, I’m always watching new shows and now with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and all the others, there are a endless supply of shows for me to watch. I don’t like to work in silence, the quiet tends to make my mind wander. Instead of putting on an episode of Friends on in the background the next time I’ve working, I’ll try some music or a Podcast.
I have had poor posture for as long as I can remember. There aren’t enough fingers in the world to count how many times my Mom told me to sit up straight, if only I paid more attention. At this point my bad posture is past just sitting up straight. I’ve had to visit a Chiropractor and I am trying to remember to do nightly exercises to help the pain and discomfort in my shoulders.
