I started decorating for Christmas on November 10th this year. I have never decorated that early before; usually I wait until the day after Thanksgiving. Many people in my life, my husband included, think decorating early for the holiday is ridiculous. Some people get legitimately angry.
(Side note: my husband hails from a country where they only really celebrate Christmas Eve. Christmas Day is a day of relaxation on a rare day off from work; and they decorate very sparingly if at all. So, he is extra creeped out by the Christmas Season. However, the fact that he is married to someone who identifies the ‘Christmas Season’ as a whole, as her favorite holiday, means he’ll have to get used to it)
- First, like I said before Christmas Season is my favorite holiday. Not just December 25th, but, the whole Christmas season. I love the lights, the decoration, the parties, the music, the movies, all of it. I even the love the weather. December in DC is nice, it has just started to get cold, but not the brisk, windy cold of March, it’s the cold I can enjoy. Also, people are nicer, happier and generally in a better mood during Christmas season.
- Secondly, not going into too much detail, the past couple of months have been rough personally; and honestly the state of the world has been getting me down. So, if something trivial like a decorated tree, a cinnamon scented candle, holiday music/movies and some twinkle lights can put me in a better mood then I’m going to enjoy those things for a few extra weeks this year.
So, to the people I mentioned earlier, who get angry by the Christmas décor going up in November, maybe take a few seconds and realize all these decorations are bringing a lot of people joy. We could use more joy in this world right now, why do you want to steal our joy?.
But, if you still feel the need to be angry, why don’t you find someone else who angers easily by red and green and twinkle lights, and complain with them and just let me be happy.
Especially at night, because the decorations are extra pretty at night.
